The Danish Energy Agency has awarded DONG Energy the concession to build the next major offshore wind farm in Denmark off the Danish island of Anholt in the Kattegat.

The construction of the wind farm will represent a total investment of Approximately DKK 10 billion.

With a capacity of 400 MW, the wind farm will be able to supply CO2-free power corresponding to the annual power consumption of more than 400,000 Danish households, or four per cent of Denmark's power consumption.

“Building Anholt offshore wind farm is an important milestone in the expansion of green energy production in Denmark. DONG Energy is therefore happy to build Denmarks next large wind farm,” said Anders Eldrup, CEO of DONG Energy, and added:

“Building Anholt offshore wind farm will bring DONG Energy a major step closer towards the vision of supplying energy without CO2.”

Siemens Wind Power will deliver the turbines that will have a capacity of 3.6 MW each.

According to the tender specifications, the wind farm must supply its first power by the end of 2012, and the entire wind farm must be commissioned by the end of 2013. Otherwise delays will result in a reduced tariff income and a penalty if all turbines are not connected to the grid by 31 December 2013 at the latest.

DONG Energy has built half of the largest offshore wind farms in the world, making it the market leader in the field. In 2009, DONG Energy built the world's largest offshore wind farm, Horns Rev 2, which has a capacity of 209 MW and is situated in the Danish sector of the North Sea. In UK DONG Energy has just inaugurated the wind farm Gunfleets Sands 1+2, and is currently involved in three more offshore wind farm projects in the UK.
