MyCelx Minimizes Environmental Footprint for Deepwater Platforms

Gulf of Mexico evaluation removes water soluble organics and oils to reliably meet EPA limits

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- MyCelx, the ISO-9001 company certified for oil removal to less than 5 ppm by Lloyd’s Register, announces successful ongoing evaluations from an Oil & WSO Removal Module in Deepwater Gulf of Mexico.

Until now, alternative methods of treating water produced from offshore drilling were unreliable for meeting overboard discharge specifications set by the EPA. The MyCelx site in the Gulf of Mexico removes all oils and WSO’s in produced water to less than 10 ppm (parts per million), compared to the current EPA limit, 29 ppm—allowing for safe, oil-free water and no sheen discharge into the environment.

"We are excited about the promising results from this evaluation. WSO, or Water Soluble Organics, cause huge problems in meeting the oil in water discharge specifications especially in deepwater platforms. All the operators have been looking for a better way of dealing with the WSO’s," said Hari Parthasarathy, MyCelx’s Applications and Technical Manager.

The results of the MyCelx system will impact the future of quality water monitoring. Evaluations suggest that current produced water treatment operating costs are reduced by half with the MyCelx module.

Preliminary field analysis compares MyCelx to alternative treatment methods for WSO removal. The large size and hazardous nature of alternatives, granular activated carbon and acid addition respectively, required high maintenance costs. At one third the size and one tenth the weight of activated carbon systems, MyCelx generates significantly less waste and incurs a significantly reduced environmental impact. MyCelx is also much easier, safer and more cost effective to maintain than acid addition. The module’s oil removing capability continues to work even when upstream equipments are failing.

MyCelx looks forward to scaling up its produced water treatment operations in the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico by early next year.
