South Carolina Ports Authority will be the First Port Operator in the U.S. to Manage Navis SPARCS N4 from One Central Location Across Multiple SitesCustomers’ Benefits Will Include Centralized Visibility of Information as Well as Web-Based Electronic Data Interchange OAKLAND, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Zebra Enterprise Solutions (ZES), a division of Zebra Technologies (NASDAQ: ZBRA), announced today that the South Carolina State Ports Authority (SCSPA) is poised to make history. By next year, the SCSPA will become the first port operator in North America to manage Navis SPARCS N4 terminal operating system (TOS) from a central location across multiple sites.
Based in Charleston, South Carolina, the SCSPA will implement SPARCS N4 to manage container and breakbulk cargo operations across six marine terminals by 2011. The ports authority’s goal is to offer a single point-of-entry to customers irrespective of which terminal they chose to conduct business. The six SCSPA terminals to be managed by SPARCS N4 include Wando Welch, North Charleston, Columbus Street, Union Pier and Veterans, all in the Port of Charleston, and the Port of Georgetown. The SCSPA is one of the nation’s 10 largest seaports, each year handling $44 billion in cargo and 1.28 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units, a standard measure in intermodal transport). It chose Navis SPARCS N4 to replace its mature in-house systems primarily to bring on a proven, robust, commercially-supported TOS. The Navis TOS is implemented at 260 sites globally. “Improving cargo visibility, accuracy and productivity will benefit companies choosing the Port of Charleston and Georgetown,” said Jim Newsome, SCSPA president & CEO. “Charleston has a global reputation for productivity, and the deepest channels in the Southeast routinely handle big ships up to 48 feet in draft. This will enhance South Carolina’s position as the preferred place to do business.” The web-based SPARCS N4 operating system governs the movement of container logistics and operations and offers users improved customer support, lower operating costs and increased utilization. It enables greater control over resources for operations to quickly and intelligently respond to changes in the flow of cargo. More importantly, SCSPA customers should start to enjoy the benefits of migration to SPARCS N4, including centralized visibility of information, as well as enhanced communication with SCSPA via web-based electronic data interchange. SPARCS N4 supports paperless operations and reduces costly errors. Bill Walsh, General Manager at Zebra Enterprise Solutions, said SCSPA will be the lead break bulk customer in North America and ZES will work in partnership with the ports authority to improve its break bulks systems capabilities. “SPARCS N4 will be considered an integrated piece of the suite of logistics and overall business management applications used by SCSPA,” Walsh said. "SPARCS N4 will enable SCSPA to address tough challenges that may arise, as a result of its growth, and will help the 6 terminals successfully meet or exceed its business goals." "By selecting SPARCS N4, SCSPA will leverage more than 1000 site-years of live production experience in more than 50 countries at more than 400 customer sites around the world. Neither an in-house system nor a competitor can provide SCSPA with this level of flexibility, depth of functionality and ROI."
